The Colden Common Shed - a workshop / meeting place for retired men (mostly) to meet socially
The Colden Common Shed provides a forum and meeting venue for those (mainly but not exclusively men) approaching or are already retired, where they can either get involved with the DIY workshop activities, (making such things as vegetable planters, hedgehog homes, etc.), or just come along for a cup of tea and a natter. Short craft courses are occasionally offered, as well as trips out to such places as Bletchley Park, BMW factory, etc. We aim to provide a meeting place, and companionship.
Why the community needs usAlthough facilities such as the W.I. are readily available for women, opportunities for men as they retire, to meet and socialise with others are far harder to find. The Colden Common Shed offers those who live in the surrounding area the opportunity to involve themselves with physical activities in the workshop environment (mainly woodworking), or if they prefer just to come along for a cup of tea and a natter. This has been shown to have great mental and health benefits for the participants.
Our impact on the communityThe Colden Common Shed has been open since August 2015, and its membership has steadily grown to around 20, with more joining regularly as news gets around of what we are about. Members have been actively involved with village activities, such as the Queen's Litter Pick, building of hedgehog homes, and refurbishment of the Recreation Pavilion. Plans are currently afoot to build a larger purpose designed, better equipped shed to accommodate more members. Donations will help us achieve this aim.
