We run weekly garden groups and provide garden-based activity workshops for other organisations. These services enable people whose lives are affected by dementia to work together in the garden, and connect with the natural environment. Using the principles of Horticultural Therapy we adapt activities to provide sensory stimulation, exercise, promote a sense of purpose, achievement and reduce social isolation
Why the community needs usStatistics provided by Alzheimer's Society show that the number of people diagnosed with dementia is rising rapidly (from 2010/11 to 2015/16 there was a 56% rise in diagnoses) We offer a unique amenity within the local community and through our mobile service we aim to reach people with dementia throughout Hertfordshire. We also aim to support and engage with the families and carers of people living with dementia by including them in workshops and providing time just for them.
Our impact on the communityWe are a resource for individuals with dementia in our community (According to Alzheimer's Society 1 in 14 over 65s will develop dementia and the condition affects 1 in 6 over the age of 80). We also provide activities for carers and families (Alzheimer's Research UK states that 63.5% of carers have no or not enough support). We focus on our clients' potential. After attending one of our workshops Dorothy, who has dementia, told us 'I've had a lovely time and I've learned something new!'
