Trauma Breakthrough is a UK charity supporting adult survivors of trauma and abuse. 1-in-5 people experience trauma (childhood abuse, accidents, domestic violence, sexual assault) during their lifetime. Breakthrough provide specialist support and wellbeing services, a crisis helpline for service-users in distress and at risk of harm to themselves, individual and group therapy, and befriending for survivors; as well as training for friends & family, businesses, churches and other community organisations in how to provide effective support for those struggling with their mental health.
Our impact in 2022-23:
- We made even more services available at our Support Centre providing in-person mental health support and a place of safety for those in crisis
- We had 516 new referrals (referrals have increased by 2000% since lockdown)
- We ran nearly 650 individual therapy sessions and 89 group sessions (for up to 16 people) - we now run 3 groups a week, a 2hr psychotherapy group, a group for male survivors of sexual abuse, and a START group helping people build skills to recover from trauma
- Our therapists also help 99 clinical assessment sessions building support plans for those in crisis.
- Our office team provided signposting services for 376 people

Over 25% of referrals were from men, and 4% from those who identify as non-binary
31% of referrals were for those age 18-25, and 6% for those age 60+
72% of our service users have experienced sexual abuse or sexual assault
Over 75% have experienced abuse/trauma in both childhood AND adulthood
1 in 6 would consider themselves to have a disability or access need
1 in 3 of our service users have struggled with addiction as a coping strategy
