Our charity was set up in 1998 to create barrier-free workspace and provide employment and voluntary opportunities for disabled people. Our building demonstrates how workspace can be designed and built without the barriers that disable people. We provide affordable barrier-free accommodation for organisations led by, employing and serving disabled people. We work with employers to promote and champion inclusive and empowering workplaces for disabled people.

Why the community needs us

Employment is a key to independant living. Accessible places of work offer employment opportunities and genuine equality for disabled people. We provide long-term security for local voluntary organisations working in the field of disability, and barrier-free conference facilities for people from Bristol and beyond. The Vassall Centre is a national showcase to demonstrate and promote access standards that will enable equality for disabled people in workplaces throughout the UK.

Our impact on the community

"The Vassall Centre reacts positively and practically to the challenge of barriers, applying common sense to find ingenious solutions in creating more inclusive environments" George Ferguson, Bristol-based Architect and former President of the Royal Institute of British Architects. Or, as a wheelchair-user said "In The Vassall Centre, I am not disabled!" The Vassall Centre Trust will be running a number of exciting new projects in 2011, including an internet work club for disabled people.
