Walk Colchester is an inclusive, community-based organisation, founded in 2010 with the aim of protecting, improving & promoting Colchester's walking environment and supporting safe enjoyable pedestrianism for walkers & chair-users of all abilities.
Why the community needs usBy supporting local drives to encourage healthy, sustainable lives & transport choices, reconnecting people with their local walking environment & working to remove barriers to their participation in walking. We create opportunities for local people to get involved in the recording, auditing, photographing & mapping of the town's pathway network & enabling the sharing of local walking knowledge; by raising standards/expectations & making Colchester a more pleasant and inclusive place to walk.
Our impact on the communityWe have a growing library of local walks, beautifully illustrated with supporting slide shows and inclusive access information. We host an annual two-day walking event each May (local walks led by local people on local themes) as part of the global 'Jane's Walk' movement: http://www.walkcolchester.org.uk/projects/janes-walk-2012. We recently launched the Colchester Boma project - an all-terrain go-kart for community use enabling disabled and elderly walkers to access the open countryside.
