Wimborne Community Theatre is a project-based group of East Dorset residents (currently 12 - 90 years) who devise original performances set in unusual outdoor sites or non-theatre buildings, working in partnership with artists and arts/heritage organizations. Working with artists and theatre makers, we research, devise and create new theatre productions reflecting back memories and local stories (historical and contemporary), taking inspiration from the unusual locations in which we perform.
Why the community needs usWe provide an opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to develop their creativity and sense of community through theatre, exploring local places and their history. Through attending our performances, the audience becomes a partner in a shared experience, celebrating a sense of heritage and community. Members say 'Working creatively with different people gave me confidence to cope better in my work' 'It's not a run of the mill drama club - we explore community in a fun way.'
Our impact on the communityOver the last twenty years, thousands of children, young people and adults have taken part in these productions, attended by audiences of many thousands. Nineteen original productions have been created, focusing on local stories or issues, contemporary and historical. People have said: ''It brings us all together - actors and audience - & brings places to life'. It brings attention to buildings and places that might otherwise not be known to a majority of people.'
