Providing quality opportunities and activities for young people who have disabilities.
YOU CAN is a vibrant organisation working with young people aged 10-24 who have learning and physical disabilities. Starting as an afterschool club in 1995, the club has grown to become a regional base for over 150 disabled young people who, every week, take part in activities in sports, arts and outdoor pursuits. We deliver quality projects, using activities not only for enjoyment and fun, but also to make lasting change to our members' confidence, self-belief and aspirations.
Why the community needs usYOU CAN's projects allow young disabled people to take part in structured activities in enjoyable and fun environments. This safe social setting is vital for young people who may often feel isolated in their communities, and who may be at risk of anti-social behaviour. Our activities provide valuable respite to parents, carers and families. And our projects also offer volunteering opportunities for disabled and non-disabled adults who want to give something back to their local community.
Our impact on the communityOur activities encourage huge personal changes in young people who face major hardships in their lives. All projects are designed to increase the personal and social skills of the members, benefiting such things as communication, confidence, improved health and fitness. Staff actively encourage members to become involved in decision-making and planning, and allow members to take on roles of leadership. This gives young people a great sense of ownership and pride in their achievements.
YOU CAN are always on the look-out for committed and skilled volunteers for a wide variety of projects. Please contact the organisation if you think you can add something to our team of dedicated volunteers.
