Colchester Samaritans offers confidential, emotional support to people in crisis, feeling distressed or suicidal. Trained volunteers are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Our volunteers are able to listen to you any time day or night. We can help you talk through whatever is troubling you, find the answers that are right for you and offer support. You don't have to give your real name or any personal information if you don't want to. Phone, email or write.
Why the community needs usWe offer human contact and our time, undivided attention and warmth to meet any fundamental emotional needs in order to reduce distress and despair. Listening allows people to explore their feelings and reach a better understanding of their situation and the options open to them. Respecting the decisions people make about their own lives, in confidence, and without judging them, can enable them to find inner strength and clarity. Support is given in person, on the phone and by email.
Our impact on the communityOur callers have said: 'I've talked about things I didn't realise I even thought about'; 'Thank you for being there'; 'I don't remember your name but I will never forget you'; 'You saved my life.' Kevin from Colchester had decided to take his own life; but at the last minute, he rang Samaritans. Everything became too much for TV star Maria Fowler (from TV's 'The Only Way is Essex') and she attempted to take her own life. Since then, Maria has sought support from Samaritans and now helps others.
