Ebony Horse Club is a riding centre with a difference. Based in Brixton, we use horses to raise the aspirations, education, life skills and well-being of children and young people growing-up in disadvantaged communities in south London. In addition to riding and horse care lessons, trips and activities, members are supported to explore future education and careers ambitions. Our aim is for every member to reach their potential, whether on or off a horse.
Why the community needs usOur nine Brixton horses give access to a sport that would otherwise be inaccessible in an inner-city urban community which is one of the most disadvantaged in the country. We have developed partnerships with 14 local schools whose pupils participate in our RIDE (Riding to Inspire Development and Education) programme. Several teachers have observed how learning to ride can generate an appetite for learning and build confidence in their pupils.
Our impact on the communityEach year, over 500 local children and young people access Ebony Horse Club. Each of our activities are designed to build key life skills - teamwork, communication, empathy and responsibility. We can now demonstrate long-term sustainable impact as children who started riding at Ebony Horse Club from 8 years of age are now pursuing further/higher education and careers as a direct result of our support.
