Equals has been created to celebrate equality and diversity on the Isle of Wight and to raise awareness and actively promote anti-discriminatory practices and attitudes. Equals works to promote appreciation of other cultures and of people with different disabilities and to create a safe environment in which to share concerns.
Why the community needs usEquals IW is the only group supporting issues for people from minority ethnic communities on the Isle of Wight. We give support on any issue regarding the other equality and diversity strands. The Equals IW Friendship Group supports women from the BME community across the Island by providing a network of support and activities aimed at improving self confidence and personal development, breaking down barriers to participation and promoting inclusion.
Our impact on the communityThe Equals Friendship Group Project was recognized and awarded a third place prize in the Community Action South East Empowerment Awards 2011. We have working partnerships with the Police, IW College, IW Council, Community Action and other community groups. Members of the Friendship group paticularly benefit from our Back to Work training successfully supporting their return to employment. Equals raises awareness in the community, helping to reduce all discrimination and harassment.
