On Sunday 1st November I will cycle 40 miles on stony paths along the river Thames (from Putney to Walton-on-Thames)!
I am not a cyclist, and this is not my preferred sport; so not only are you investing in a life changing campaign you are also providing additional motivation for me to complete this mission!
Your donation today will contribute to the literacy focus at SYLA, a project which use creative means to stimulate and engage reluctant readers and writers, often several years behind their peers.
This charity supports boys from the age of 8 to help them reach their full potential and become independent, responsible and productive members of the community.
These boys are living in deprived areas of South London and are often at risk of academic exclusion. Their progress at school is severely hampered by low reading and writing skills, and access to tailored support in a structured and safe environment..
The Big Literacy Project, piloted last year will encourage boys to enjoy reading and enable them to gain confidence in writing and performing their work. It will be co-delivered by local artists, writers and recording venues such as the apple store.
Although the behaviour of the boys can be improved through mentoring and training in managing their emotions, without their academic ability being improved, "they just don't want to be there".
Please support a great cause and join this fight against child illiteracy on your doorstep.
