I am a recently-recruited Trustee for the SYLA charity with a plan to cycle to Istanbul (perhaps not all the way.... we are getting the ferry across the channel!).
This gives us an effective starting point in Holland leaving there on 27 July 2014 and expecting to get to Istanbul on or close to 3rd September.I am travelling with one companion(also cycling).Completing the 2,500 mile route in that 39 day time period is ambitious(it means an average daily distance of some 65 miles) especially since we will be travelling with all our gear including camping equipment.
We'll be taking the popular Rhine and Danube cycle routes from the Hook of Holland,through Germany, Austria, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria and into Turkey and the city of Istanbul....where the West and East meet.
I am approaching 60 and also am an experienced cyclist(for example,I will have done 12,5-day charity cycle rides in the last 12 years).
