We are hosting a Memorial Football Match to honour and remember Andreas, who was the most wonderful of men. We all miss him so much and hope that he will be watching and laughing as his friends and family attempt to play football against his team.
Andreas was concerned about childhood hunger and the impact it had on children’s ability to learn and progress in life. He was also frustrated by the lack of safe spaces for young people these days, with the loss of youth clubs and other facilities. We hope that, as well as getting together to honour his memory, we will be able to raise funds to make a contribution towards the lives of young people in Camden (where he lived), to provide them with opportunities for a brighter future. Amongst other things, Young Camden Foundation runs a Holiday Hunger programme providing free 4-hours-a-day, 4-days-a-week holiday clubs to those most in need, which includes, arts, sports, social support, two meals a day and education on healthy eating. This Foundation works in partnership with local organisations (including our own most local community centre) to create long-term support networks for the children and their families.
Anyone who knew Andreas will have experienced how he was always there to help his friends and family whenever they needed him. He never spoke about any of things he did for people: he never sought recognition or thanks. For him it was enough that he had helped. Since he's been gone I have lost count of all the people who have told me "I will never forget how Andreas helped me with..." almost invariably something wonderful that he never mentioned to anyone.
I think Andreas would like the idea that he could continue to quietly help people and I hope he will approve of us trying. Andreas’s respect and love continues to be the most valuable thing I could hope to have in life and I would like to continue earning it.
