About

I have decided to set myself a challenge for 2022 and try and do something for others.  As most of you will know I am a Mental Health Nurse and have worked with people who are affected by drugs or alcohol for the last 21 years.

Substance misuse could affect anyone of us or our families  but many people still hold such negative and stereotypical views of people who find themselves affected by drugs or alcohol.

Just before Christmas I found out that one of my favourite service users (I know you shouldn’t have favourites) was dying.  My colleague (Martin Smith) and I worked with him for many years, we had a lot of laughs but equally as many tears along the way!

He wouldn’t mind me saying this (as it was always something he talked about and was able to reflect on) but he was one of the most difficult people I have ever worked with in my career and had such a profound affect on how I managed other service users with similar presentations throughout my nursing career since.  He also challenged some of my own prejudices for which I am very grateful to him for. When I returned to work after Christmas 2021 I was told that he had passed away on Christmas Eve.  In January at the funeral my colleague Martin shared the devastating news that he was ill and he sadly passed away in March 22.
I’ve decided to do something in memory of both of them and raise some money for a charity that doesn’t get the recognition it deserves for the great work it does in Sheffield. I know they would both support this decision.

I will be walking/cycling the 1407km from John O Groats to Lands End over the next 12 months raising money for Bens Centre in Sheffield.  They are a charity that aims to provide a safe space and an open hand to those who suffer through substance misuse and it’s associated barriers.

I’d  really appreciate your support in raising some money for Bens Centre and support our cities vulnerable people, please share & donate

 Many thanks
 Adele
