A team of "Blood Runners" will be running the Run Gatwick 10k in aid of SERV Sussex. All members of the team have a direct connection with the charity either as a serving volunteer, spouse or relation.
We have all seen first hand the remarkable work this charity does in providing free transport services for blood, blood products and other urgent medical items for NHS Hospitals across Sussex. Operating between the hours of 7pm and 6am, Monday to Friday and 24 hours at weekends and Bank Holidays via a committed team of volunteer riders and drivers mainly using their own vehicles at their own expense.
By offering this free service, SERV enables hospitals to focus their resources on patient care by reducing transport bills. SERV Sussex also provides free transport for the movement of donated human milk.
The services are run primarily utilising the volunteer's own vehicle, however, SERV also has a fleet of marked bikes and cars that are funded by charitable donations:
£30 is a tank of fuel for a fleet bike
£60 is a hi-viz jacket for a volunteer
£200 covers the cost of fuel for a fleet bike for a month
