The building was in disrepair when taken over from Cardiff Council, over the last 4 years the building has deteriorated further with the Trustees beginning a programme of structural and cosmetic refurbishment but the building is not DDA compliant and requires significant work to make it accessible to the wider community . With more community groups growing from within the site the requirement of services for the deaf community is growing .
Why they need our serviceCardiff Deaf Centre has been the social, cultural and emotional home of the Deaf Community in Cardiff and the surrounding area for over 40 years . Many generations of the Deaf Community in Cardiff have grown up in the centre or met their life partners at the centre. The location provides a safe and welcome space for the Deaf Community and is the address of several community groups that provide, services, inflammation, advice and guidance for the Deaf Community in South Wales
Plan and expected resultsEvery month 200 to 300 people use the building, with the addition of Cardiff Deaf Creative Hands use of the centre has doubled . As the building is improved more services will be able to be offered to the community and we anticipate the use of the building will double again. Deaf Cafe and training hub, consultation/therapy suite and community hub are just a few of the plans to meet community need .
