I am running the Brighton Marathon on Sunday 7th April 2024 to raise money for Olly's Future, a UK grassroots young suicide prevention charity. As many of you know this is a cause close to my heart both personally and professionally. Your donation will go directly towards the charity's work helping to prevent young people from losing their lives to suicide, the main cause of death for young people in the UK under the age of 35.
For anyone planning to cheer me on with a day trip to Brighton, the marathon starts at 9am and I hope to finish in one piece by 2-3pm. Jelly babies, orange segments and loud cheers are warmly welcome!
The course doubles on itself so there are plenty of opportunities to scream at me to run faster. Course map: http://tiny.cc/BM2024Map
Olly's Future (Reg Charity No. 1187184) began in loving memory of Olly Hare, my close friend who lost his life to suicide on 14th February 2017. It is impossible to sum up someone as special as Olly or the pain felt when we lost him. However, his legacy of joyous adventure and unbridled compassion for others lives on through Olly's Future and its initiatives.
Over 4,500 people have already benefitted from the charity's 'Talking About Suicide: 10 Tools (TAS10)' training initiative which gives participants the confidence to support someone they are worried about, who might be having suicidal thoughts. Participants are taught how to maintain non-judgemental conversations with the person and are given a practical toolkit to connect them with onward support. Read more: https://t.ly/qX8Kr
Medical students across the UK are also being trained to embed suicide prevention in their practice as part of their taught curriculum via the charity's Dr SAMS (Suicide Awareness in Medical Students) initiative. The aim is for the doctors of tomorrow to take better care of themselves and their peers so that they can take better care of their patients. Read more: https://t.ly/ar_Ya
