Charlie is Lapping the Lough for Angel Eyes NI

Charlie Hendron, from Lisburn, County Down, is gearing up to cycle an impressive 100 miles around Lough Neagh on 9th June — all in support of Angel Eyes NI, a charity dedicated to helping children with visual impairments and their families.

Where It All Began

“In just a couple of weeks’ time, I’ll be tackling the 100-mile cycle around Lough Neagh,” Charlie shares. “While it’s certainly a major challenge, it’s not my first lap — and it won’t be my last!”

What began as a fun way to support his wife’s line dancing class, Brookmount Dance Ranch, in their annual fundraising efforts has grown into a personal tradition. Each year, Charlie and his wife choose a different local charity to support through the dance class.

While Charlie is not a regular cyclist, he volunteers with Lisburn Outlook, a charity for blind and partially sighted people, where he pilots tandem bikes most Saturdays — a rewarding way to both train and give back.

While the Lough Neagh circuit can be completed in fewer miles, Charlie always extends the route to go the full 100 (often ending up around 103 miles by the time he gets home).

“The last 20–30 miles are tough, but it’s the thought of who I’m doing it for — and the incredible support from friends, family, and sponsors — that gets me over the finish line.”

A Word of Encouragement

Charlie offers heartfelt encouragement to anyone considering their own fundraising challenge:

“Yes, it can be tough and time-consuming, but there’s no better feeling than knowing you’ve pushed yourself outside your comfort zone — not for recognition, but to support others, just because you can.”
