Since 1998 Craigmillar Literacy Trust has been working alongside the community of Craigmillar to achieve our vision that every individual is empowered through literacy.
Our work is underpinned by our values - relationships, community, collaboration, nurturing and empowering.
Our projects:
Our Craigmillar Books for Babies project encourages and supports parents/carers to talk with their babies, sing songs and rhymes, share books and stories because these activities promote attachment and support early communication and language development. Families join our early literacy project through their Health Visitor at the 10-day notification visit. Last year 120 babies and their families joined our project, bringing the total number of families to just over 400.
We deliver weekly Baby & Toddler Rhymetimes in Craigmillar Library, a monthly Storytime, Family Support at Home home visiting programme, Baby Rhymetime, Talking Together early communication support and training and a comprehensive bookgifting programme.
Our Craigmillar Stories for Sharing project brings a fun and creative approach to literacy support through storytelling, where children aged 4-12 and parents/carers can explore and discover stories, books, reading and writing together. Last year 29 children from 20 families joined Stories for Sharing. There are now over 70 families in the project.
We deliver a weekly term-time family literacy group called Feel Good Friday, regular Storytimes, home visiting support a varied and fun Summer of Stories programme and a comprehensive bookgifting programme.
Express Yourself! Aims to develop, sustain and deliver an effective literacy programme with young people between the ages of 12-16 and their families to ensure young people achieve their aspirations to be all they can be. This is a new project currently in development in collaboration with young people from the community. We deliver a pop-up Club With No Name with facilitators and creative artists supporting young people to explore their creativity.
