Gladstone Terrace Centre for Young People (GTCfYP) is based at No 11-12 Gladstone Terrace in Central Gateshead. The building has been a youth work hub since 1964 and was a bustling centre for young people. Since 2014, government spending cuts sadly meant that this once thriving centre became quieter and quieter as the small charities based here closed down one by one, until there was only the Young Women’s Outreach Project (YWOP) and Gateshead Youth Assembly left. Both charities were asked to be based in No 12, and No 11 was left empty, cold and crumbling.
In 2021, YWOP and Gateshead Youth Assembly decided to work together to bring the whole building back into use and develop a new service for young people. We were able to secure an asset transfer at the end of 2022, and began to raise funds to repair and reinvigorate the building. A Steering Group was developed with young people who were accessing No 12 via multiple charities, giving a loud and clear voice to their needs and what they feel is missing locally. They created our mission, named the building and designed the logo.
Our vision has been shaped by the passion of all the young people involved. We aim to operate as a trauma informed youth hub that becomes a key place for young people to access help for all of their needs. We will offer the right support, at the right time, in the right place. We are now raising funds so that we can employ 2-3 Mental Health Youth Workers and counsellors to provide therapeutic mental health and youth work support that has been identified by our Steering Group. This will ensure we are able to build on the strong foundations to deliver a new service that is responsive and dependable.
