HENRY has allowed children and adults to try fresh fruits and vegetables that they may have never tried before. This is a first step to discussions about healthy eating and practical sessions about food preparation. As well as healthy eating, we have done activities such as quizzes, music and dance, and bread making (which was extremely popular). The wide range of topics covered has been enjoyed by both children and adults and has encouraged many to repeat activities at home.
Why they need our serviceLiving in Sutton Hill and Woodside estates without good transport links limits the source of fresh food available to families. It is easy to become trapped in ready meals that are less healthy and many have never gained the skills of food preparation. HENRY gives mothers and children a chance to consider healthier options and to begin to enjoy new alternatives, including tasty healthy snacks.
Plan and expected resultsEach week we have an average of 20 adults and 25 children at each HENRY group. Many mothers experiment with their new skills at home. An excellent example of this has been after the bread making session; a mother had felt encouraged in group and had enjoyed the satisfaction of making something like this from scratch. A few weeks later she then bought in to group some cinnamon bread which she had made with her son at home. Children are now only offered healthy snacks in the groups.
