On Saturday 18 June 2022 I will be taking part in the Eddystone Charity Pursuit on a 20 foot Hawk “Miss Muffet” to raise funds for Horizons Childrens Sailing Charity of which I am the Chair of Trustees. Horizons helps disadvantaged and disabled children from the inner city communities of Plymouth by providing opportunities to get on the water in sailing or motor boats.
In a normal year, we take over 1,000 different children sailing in almost 3,000 individual sessions. We have 28 boats ranging from small Picos to our wheelchair capable vessel “Friendship”. To keep our children safe on the water we need the best equipment and staff - which is why we have to work hard at fundraising and the Eddystone pursuit generally raises about 10% of the funds needed for the organisation annually. Find out more about our charity at www.horizonsplymouth.org
The Event starts near Plymouth Hoe, the course taking it around the Eddystone lighthouse and back - about 26 miles. The Hawks are the smallest and slowest boats sailing in the fleet of about 60 and consequently start earliest – the faster boats starting up to 4 hours later. This is an Annual event with £15000 Prize money to add to sponsorship raised.
