The Challenge:
Between 6th-13th September, weather permitting, I am going to attempt to swim the English Channel, 21 miles or 34 km at the shortest distance.
18 months ago, my witty, charming, cheeky, wicked, and often challenging brother died at the age of 52. Chris had Down’s Syndrome. He had a significant learning disability and significant heart problems. Despite this he lived life to the full but needed a lot of support along the way. He had special needs, but growing up he was my brother, soul mate, friend, and my number 1 fan! Few people can say that about their siblings! He taught me a lot about making the best of what you have.
I started University back in 1987. I initially did a Physiology Degree before moving onto to do Medicine. I met Barry in my first hall of residence, and we have been friends ever since. Alexander was born to Barry and Rosemary in 2006. Alexander has Down’s Syndrome and has needed 24/7 care from birth. I have known him all his life and Rosemary & Barry tell me that Yorda Adventures has been a lifeline for the family for the last 11 years, providing essential after school and school holiday support.
Yorda Adventures is a charity based in Chessington, supporting young people with severe disabilities and their families. It was set up by an amazing lady called Laura Smyth, it’s a small charity that relies on regular fundraising activities to keep going.
Chris and Alexander will be my inspiration during the swim, every stroke I'll be thinking of them! Thank you for reading. If you can spare a small donation, I know every pound will help.
