On 21 May I’ll be running my first ever race, the Manchester 10K, in aid of a charity very close to my heart, the South Manchester Down Syndrome Support Group (SMDSSG).
SMDSSG is an amazing charity that needs our support. It is a group that we are personally connected to because of our son Thomas, who’s 3 and has DS.
When Thomas was 4 days old, our world was turned a little upside down when we got the post-natal diagnosis of DS but with the support of family and friends who rallied around us, we realised that actually this wasn’t a bad thing, far from it , in fact we realised we were the lucky ones. Thomas’ DS made us love him more, if that’s possible. Over the last 3 years Thomas has taught me unconditional love, to look at things from a different perspective, how to learn, how to adapt and how to stand up for those that need it.
For those that know him, Thomas is a little legend in his own right and for those that don’t, he is a character. He charms the nana’s in the cafes, loves to people watch, loves to go to the park and down the biggest slides, is cheeky, patient, works hard to learn new things and most importantly is the one of the most loving people I know.
SMDSSG are a charity that rely totally on donations and the money funds an initiative called ‘Chatterbox’ which is held on a monthly basis. This group is for all families and friends who know someone with DS. Chatterbox provides a wide range of activities for children from speech therapy, sing and sign and exercise classes to crafting and general play. They also have activities for siblings and also gives us parents the chance to talk to like-minded people. We would now find ourselves lost without this network, a network we didn’t know existed until Thomas arrived!
