This year I am running two marathons in two months for three charities who make a real difference for my community. I will be running the Yorkshireman off road marathon on Sunday 12 September and the Yorkshire Marathon on Sunday 17 October.
The three charities, Slow the Flow, St Augustine’s Centre and the Community Foundation for Calderdale have all been there for us. Helping support new refugees, giving our community agency in stopping flooding, and tackling holiday hunger during COVID. All these charities stepped up during recent years and I want to do something to step up for them.
Slow the Flow
In Calderdale we have been hit by several severe floods in recent years. Led by local volunteers, Slow the Flow was set up to help reduce the amount of water in the River Calder and decrease the risk of flooding. Through building leaky dams and planting trees as well as providing training on sustainable urban drainage to show changes people can make to their own properties to reduce flood risk, Slow the Flow has given local people a chance to do something tangible about this threat to our towns.

St Augustine’s Centre
The St Augustine’s Centre in Halifax is Calderdale’s refugee charity. They help the newest members of our community settle in, offering support, guidance and advice, as well as a welcoming place where all communities can come together and build understanding. The latest Afghan crisis shows how events in other parts of the world leads to people needing support in our community.

Community Foundation for Calderdale
Calderdale’s Community Foundation is there when we need them the most. From supporting projects to tackle holiday hunger and providing computers for students working from home, to helping families with debt. This charity has over 30 years of experience and really stepped up for the people of Calderdale during the COVID pandemic and that’s why I want to step up for them.
