Settle Community Fridge started in the summer of 2021 based from our Little Hub office in Commercial Courtyard. We are currently open Mondays and Thursdays 2.30 til 4.15pm and Wednesdays 10am til 12 noon.
We work closely with Age UK North Craven and Settle Parish church who run a pop up food pantry. Anyone is welcome to come along and donate or take food away. This is as much about reducing food waste as helping support those on a low income and it seems ridiculous that with food prices rising so steeply so much good food gets thrown away.
We collect surplus fruit, veg and baked goods from local supermarkets. Most of what we get from them is perfectly good quality but in damaged packaging or past its best before date so we can pass it on to local people who will use it.
We encourage anyone with surplus food available in their shop, kitchen, allotment, garden, to bring it down and swap for something they could make use of. You may have some pears nearing their best, a glut of courgettes, a tree laden with plums or some thyme growing that needs picking. You could be going away and have some unopened cheese and tubs of yoghurt that you won’t use before you go. If you find yourself in any of the above situations then please just come along with what you have and simply swap it.
We know not everyone has things to bring and that is absolutely fine, anyone is welcome to take what food they need. As well as reducing food waste and swapping food there is also the opportunity to volunteer or get involved with other food related events we run at the Settle Quakers or help on our allotment.
