In October myself and two mates - Ste Aldred and Daniel Ince - are Running our first marathon and we have chosen Chester. Weʼre looking to raise money to support WISH CDG - a volunteer group that supports children and their families in Widnes & St Helens that are diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes.
We are hoping that the training we have done and the support from family and friends will get us through the day!
In January 2013 our life changed when our then 2 year old daughter, Mia was rushed to hospital fighting for her life. She was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and from that day our lives changed. At the time we had no idea just how serious the condition is or how much time, energy and worry goes into keeping her healthy. Every day is a constant battle to try and keep Mia's blood glucose levels stable, testing her blood sugars day and night, carb counting what she eats and planning ahead how much insulin she receives.
Mia is now a happy, energetic, bright 8 year old who amazes us every day with her strength and courage. It is heartbreaking though to watch her go through it all every day.
WISH CDG have really helped and supported us over the last 6 years and they help other children and families with Type 1 Diabetes here in Widnes and St Helens.

In brief, Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune condition. For reasons not fully understood, the immune system, which is meant to protect us from foreign bodies, such as viruses and bacteria, mistakenly attacks and destroys the beta cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. Insulin is a hormone that allows glucose to move from the bloodstream into cells, which can then be used for energy. Someone with type 1 Diabetes will not have enough insulin or any insulin at all, meaning that blood glucose will fall or rise outside of the normal levels. This means that regular insulin injections are required to manage blood sugar levels.
