Petersfield Climate Action Network (PeCAN) and The Petersfield School Appeal Trust (aka TPS Development Fund) have teamed up to raise money for solar panels at TPS.

What The Petersfield School (TPS) want to do and how you can help

TPS plan to install a 50kWp Solar PV system to provide clean electricity for the school and reduce their use of fossil fuels.

100% of the electricity produced by the panels would be consumed by the school which is the most efficient way to use the solar energy, direct from source.  It will directly offset electricity that would normally be imported from the grid offering an energy and financial saving.  It will need around 200 solar panels, and will save approximately 12 tonnes of CO2 per year.

TPS and PeCAN are fundraising £10,000 towards the solar panels, and we need your help.  Your donations will support decarbonising the school, as well as providing a valuable learning opportunity to the students. The further funding needed will come from government, educational and East Hampshire District Council (EHDC) grants.

TPS thank PeCAN for their continuous fundraising support for this project, and others, that will help decarbonise the school and town.

About TPS

The Petersfield School is a happy and vibrant school located in the heart of the South Downs. The school has 1,394 students and 137 staff. It opened on 20 June 1958 and remains the only state-funded secondary school in Petersfield.

Students are fully engaged with environmental activism at TPS.  They tackle issues collaboratively and creatively, developing sustainable initiatives with teachers, the wider student population and local business stakeholders.

The Eco Committee meets weekly to discuss projects and progress which have included an update of all school lighting to energy-saving LED bulbs, monitoring of air quality, creation and development of a thriving allotment, planting of fruiting trees, energy audits, and campaigning including public speaking at the East Hampshire COP26.  Representatives from the Committee meet regularly with Accent Catering to reduce waste and improve recycling and composting, whilst also engaging with the wider student body to create a second-hand uniform swap shop and clothes upcycling workshops.  TPS are proud to be one of the founding schools of the Hampshire Sustainable Schools Network (HSSN).

Student-led priorities for 2022 include:

  1. Decarbonising buildings by installing solar panels, thermostatic radiators, double glazing, insulation and pipework improvements.

  2. Supporting greener transport by creating a Travel Policy and a School Travel Plan using Modeshift STARS.  Initiatives include ride and stride, clean air day promotion, road safety skills training.

  3. Reviewing land use to support biodiversity by developing an Environmental Plan to include tree planting, landscaping improvements, rewilding, development of an allotment and habitat creation

TPS has a long-established reputation for traditional values, high academic achievement and provides an outstanding student experience. Underpinning their belief that every child should be happy and successful are their school values of enjoy, respect and achieve.

They support their students to become confident and resilient young people, ready to make a significant positive difference in a changing world.  Fantastic academic results open the door to great opportunities and the distinctive features of a TPS student are their ambition, commitment and self-confidence. These attributes are fostered through an extensive programme of co-curricular and leadership opportunities for all students.
