23 April 2023. 26.2 miles / 42.2 km. London, UK. LET'S DO THIS!
8 long years after my last marathon, I'm dusting off my trainers, sending up a prayer to the running gods, and taking on the London Marathon - one of the most iconic running events in the world.
This has been a boyhood dream - since I was a kid growing up, and being told that running isn't for me, I've been fully focussed on one day completing this event. It's one of the toughest to get into (this was my 14th attempt at entering the ballot) - but in return, it's one of the most scenic, rewarding, and well-supported. Bring it on!
And whilst the desire to run my 5th marathon in my home-country is a big driving factor, I want to be purpose-driven in helping others benefit from my drive to achieve - and so I will be using this opportunity to raise much-needed funds for the team at House of Bread, in my hometown of Stafford, UK.
It's hard to truly encapsulate the work they do - to simply say they offer a food bank, a soup kitchen, advice, guidance, companionship...that would be too reductive. For the work that they do goes well beyond: It's the fabric of a community, it's a support network to the marginalised, it's a port in a storm to hundreds who face literal and metaphorical storms every day.
And your donations will help keep this independent charity functioning - your well-earned cash will go towards helping keep the lights on and to ensuring there are plentiful donations...but more than that, your donations will go towards giving carers a break, providing an exhausted family with a chance to bond (a meal out, a day out, a trip out), it will be reinvested into providing support to those affected by poor mental health or social isolation.
So, I ask you: Dig deep, spare something (anything!), be kind, lead with empathy - because your donations will go such a long way.
