The Age Activity Centre is for local people over 60 in Wandsworth, aiming to help them stay active, independent and healthy, while living in their own homes for as long as possible. Although the centre chiefly supports older people from African and Caribbean communities, it is open to all local residents. There are more than 10 activities per week, healthy, value for money lunches and a minibus to bring people to the centre. To donate to this project, please state this in your donation message.

Why they need our service

Older people are one of the most excluded groups in society, with low incomes and a high incidence of poor health and physical immobility. Older people find it ever more difficult to enjoy a good quality of life. Ageing can reduce their opportunities for physical and social activities, and limit their ability to make or maintain friendships, and the fact that many older people live alone increases their sense of isolation. Staying active and social is very important to their independence.

Plan and expected results

The Age Activity Centre supports over 120 older people a year, helping them to stay active and live independently in their own homes for longer. They are enabled to take part in volunteering opportunites, social activities and keep fit clasees, learn new skills and make new friends. Funding for the centre provides day trips and activities, as well as regular social events such as our Christmas parties and the recent Jubilee Party. Funding will also go towards a new downstairs computer room.
