On Sunday 23rd I will be taking part in a sponsored walk, from Linby to Newstead Abbey and back again, in support of Literacy Volunteers. And of course I am looking for sponsors!
Literacy Volunteers is a Nottinghamshire charity that helps children in primary schools with their reading and confidence. We have over 150 Volunteers going into schools across Notts every week to help children. I personally volunteer at a super little school in Trowell. It is fantastically rewarding to be able to help young children who may be struggling with reading - a core life skill that most of us take for granted. Early years help, such as LV provides, can change the course of a little girl’s or boy’s life!
There is a small subscription fee for schools who participate in the program but this only covers part of the cost of recruiting, training and supporting the dedicated volunteers. The rest of the cost of providing this brilliant service comes through grants and donations.
As you can imagine, in these days of squeezed funding and ever-tightening budgets, times are tough for little local chairities like Literacy Volunteers. So every penny we can raise through other means of fundraising is especially needed.
