As some of you may know, Fran and I have recently become volunteer hosts for Sussex Nightstop, a local charity connected to DePaul UK, the Youth Homelessness Charity. Nightstop (and us, as hosts), provides accommodation to 16-24 year-olds affected by homelessness or a vulnerable housing situation through the spare rooms of community volunteers. After extensive training and a few visits from a social worker, Fran and I are now able to provide a bed, a hot meal, and some space to a young person in need. It takes only 2 weeks to become entrenched in homelessness, and therefore through their work, Nightstop aim to prevent this cycle from taking hold, trying to cut short the devastating effect this can have on the life and future of a young person. So far we have found hosting to be a nerve-wracking yet thoroughly rewarding experience, which has taught us more than we ever expected about ourselves (namely that I am quite bad at waking up grumpy teenagers in the morning!). I have been training to run the Brighton Marathon in April to raise money for Nightstop to be able to continue their fantastic work in training up new hosts. I would be so appreciative if you feel you would be able to contribute something, no matter how small, as I drag my (short) legs round 26.2 miles. Thankyou Alice (+ Fran, who has just begun her running career!)
