I have decided to challenge myself this summer to ride 100 miles in the Prudential RideLondon 100. This ride sets out from London and heads into the Surrey hills before heading back to town and finishing on the Mall. The event is huge and has always been something I have fancied doing.
I have partly taken on this challenge to support a great social enterprise in East London, Bikeworks. Their aim is to support people who are disadvantaged in someway by using the bicycle as a tool for change. They run inclusive cycling clubs, cycle training and an employment and training programme, among other things.
Bikeworks have asked me to fundraise specifically for their employment and training section. This programme helps retrain people who are long term unemployed or struggling to find work due to physical or mental disability to become bike mechanics. The practical nature of the work suits people who may have missed out on formal qualifications at school. The employment and training courses have great outcomes, with at least 50% of graduates who have become qualified bike mechanics gaining employment.
The courses cannot run without funding and each place on a level 1 course costs £800. I am hoping to get some way to raising enough money for one person to get a place on the course - this is important as there are many restrictions on government funding and not everyone in need of a chance qualifies, therefore sponsored spaces and private funding is really important.
Thanks for your support and I will let you all know how I get on!
