Archaeological excavation in Roman Malta
Physical Challenge
Hi! My name is Imogen and I am studying a Bachelor of Archaeology at Flinders University in Adelaide, South Australia. I have been accepted to join an archaeological excavation team with Heritage Malta, The University of South Florida, and Intercontinental Archaeology to excavate a Roman Domus in Rabat, Malta in June of 2022. The Domus is the remains of an aristocratic Roman town house, featuring intricate mosaics, a number of building footings, and the remains of an ancient road. This site was accidentally discovered in 1881 and has since been excavated in the early 19th and 20th centuries. This project will be my first season excavating and I am so excited to have the opportunity to participate in this expedition. As a volunteer, I am required to pay for my own flights, accommodation, and transport...a hefty amount for anyone, let alone a full-time student. I was supposed to visit Crete in June of 2020 as part of my studies, but due to COVID-19 the trip was cancelled and opportunities for education-specific travel have been few and far between. Scholarships for humanities and arts students is also limited to non-existent, which means I am unable to secure funding from the University to attend this dig. I am asking for any donation towards my volunteer contribution, and flights if possible, as I am already working 3 jobs to cover my day-to-day expenses on top of a full study load. I will be offering hand-made thank you gifts to those who can spare some $$ to help me fulfil my dream of working overseas as an archaeologist. The deposit to secure my place is due in February 2022 and will go towards the expenses of the project. For more information about the excavation, and Roman Malta, follow this link.
