I don't do running. I HATE it. Yes I may undertake the school run most days in my 'active wear' but that's more to do with the fact it will be whatever is cleanest / nearest to my bed each morning... So anticipating running over 13 miles fills me with dread. As adults, we tend to have the luxury to focus on the things we enjoy and excel at, avoiding the things we find too demanding. The same cannot be said for children, particularly children with additional challenges - they are made to spend the majority of their days doing things which do not come naturally to them, whilst the adults talk openly about their 'deficits' above their heads. Yet these children display such bravery and tenacity in confronting their daily challenges, often when little or no adaptations are made to meet their needs - so the least I can do is pull my trainers on and put one foot in front of the other, following my courageous son's example that it is the continually moving forward that counts more than the pace. The Royal Parks Half Marathon celebrates it's tenth anniversary this year. Alexander started his formal assessment for autism when he had just turned two so it feels pertinent to undertake this event as our family has now spent a decade learning about what autism means. It may have been a different journey to that which we initially anticipated, but it is one which has brought us many great things and we are all determined to share that knowledge and understanding with others at the start of, or at difficult points on, their own journeys. Anything you can sponsor will help us support others families at Autism Angels. The charity's work is truly life changing - creating positive and long lasting improvements in communication, interaction, self esteem and independence. Autism Angels believes that everyone is good at something and, with the right support/differentiated learning in an accepting environment, we can help our children reach the very best of their potential.
