Thank you for visiting my page, I have signed up to virtually run the Belfast City Marathon on Sunday 2nd May which will also mark the beginning of Huntington's Disease Awareness Month and hope to raise as much money as I can for families affected by HD.
As a Family Support Worker for HDANI I support families and individuals who are affected by HD as well as those at risk, and see the challenges the disease brings.
Huntington's Disease is an inherited condition with symptoms, usually starting at mid-adulthood, causing a progressive loss of control over thoughts, feelings, behaviour, movement, and communication until the person requires 24-hour care. Every child conceived naturally to a parent with HD has a 50% chance of inheriting the disease.
In Northern Ireland there are around 285 families affected by HD and approximately 1,425 at risk of inheriting the gene with currently no cure.
