About

I am Benny Gamsu I lost my Dad, Simon Pickvance(pictured above) in 2012 to mesothelioma, a cancer caused only by exposure to asbestos, a material he had come into contact with while working as a bricklayer in Sheffield in the 1970s. Asbestos was finally banned in the UK in 1999 - though it is estimated to still be present in 1.5 million UK buildings, including schools. Experts predict that by 2050 UK deaths caused by asbestos will top 91,000, with 61,000 occurring from 2007 alone. It is estimated that globally over 200,000 people were killed in 2017. While asbestos is now banned in 55 countries worldwide, its use is still legal in many countries , China, Russia, India, Brazil and the US being notable examples.

On 14th April, I will be returning to my home city to run the Sheffield Half Marathon, in memory of my Dad and in aid of 2 organisations which support victims of asbestos-related illnesses.
One of these is SARAG:

South Yorkshire Asbestos Victims Support Group(SARAG) provides help, advice, information and support to people affected by asbestos-related diseases and campaign about issues affecting asbestos victims and the continuing hazards of asbestos. Funds raised will enable them to continue doing their essential work.

I am hoping to raise £1,000 pounds over the next 2 months.

Please help support the essential work this charity does in supporting the victims of asbestos by donating to my fundraising page.Thank you!
