I have the opportunity to run two marathons in April (Brighton and London). Initially, this was just going to be a personal challenge. However, in recent weeks I have given some consideration to using this as an opportunity to raise money and awareness for a local charity.
Mental health related conditions are something that everyone experiences somehow to some extent during their lives. In some ways it is quite similar to physical health, it varies and affects other parts of our bodies and our lives. But, it often goes unspoken and carries many stigmas, for many reasons.
My boyfriend, and partner in crime, has an ongoing condition that takes management. In February, he had a cry for help. He had to be admitted into a local mental health unit. This is where we have both learnt so much more about the varying needs of people with such conditions.
He has spent two weeks on the ward whilst recouperating but also beginning to explore and access the support available to him. The level of support from the local NHS service was outstanding. It turns out there's actually quite a lot of varying support that can be given, much like any other health condition.
During this time I have also been able to explore mental health related conditions as a whole but also specific to his needs. As with any other condition, it is not just about the patient. The person that knows the patient needs support too. I have found comfort in my marathon training so far.
There is a long road still ahead and much more to be explored, we are both excited for this. We both have the aim of using the experience we have had to raise awareness and continue to do what we can to support others in similar situations.
We'd like to raise a little money to support Greenwich Mind. We'd be grateful for any money you can spare for such a great cause.
