On Sunday 5th July, I will be participating in a sponsored “endurance” dinghy sailing race.
Bury Lake Young Mariners (BLYM) does wonderful work with young people, providing them with the opportunity to learn to sail and enjoy a healthy sport, while developing as individuals through the responsibilities and opportunities that the club offers.
BLYM is managed entirely by volunteers, making the club is accessible to young people from all backgrounds. Last year, BLYM delivered over 18,000 sailing sessions, mostly to young, disabled and disadvantaged people.
BLYM recently received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service and was runner-up of 1,400 clubs in the Royal Yachting Association's “Club of the Year” competition in 2015.
BLYM operates from a dilapidated clubhouse that urgently needs replacing and expanding, to provide space for accessible facilities for those with disabilities. A new £1.7m clubhouse has been designed and a further £300,000 remains to be raised to enable construction to start.
Those who have completed long-distance runs and walks for charity may ask is a dinghy race really endurance? A typical dinghy race lasts 20-40 minutes (more in my case). A six hour race in a small boat will require endurance, and very likely some physiotherapy.
Please support Bury Lake Young Mariners, so that it can continue its great work.
Thank you. Chris Hallett
