Our charge nurse, Bruce Hopkins, was involved in a motorbike RTC on Tuesday 30th August in the early hours. His life was saved by Dr James Hickman, a doctor for SAVES - Somerset Accident Voluntary Emergency Service. Bruce had fallen 20foot into a river and had a tension haemopneumothroax (a collapsed lung putting pressure on the heart). Due to the difficulties in getting him extricated from the river, the ambulance service rang for a doctor. The air ambulance was unable to fly due to bad weather, so a BASICS doctor was called for. Dr Hickman decompressed Bruce's pneumothorax at scene and saved his life. It could have been a very different story if BASICS didn't exist.
BASICS provide skilled medical care at the site of an accident or other medical emergency, or in transit. These skilled individuals volunteer their time, and the schemes they are associated with rely completely on donations to fund their life-saving equipment.
To say thank you, Poole Emergency Department are fundraising for SAVES so they can continue their lifesaving work. Please donate to enable BASICS to continue as you never know when you or a family member may be in need of their services.
