We are raising money to help refugees stranded in the North of France. Bath Welcomes Refugees is raising money to purchase desperately needed items such as tarpaulin, sleeping bags, ponchos and torches, as requested by organisations working on the ground in Calais and Dunkirk. All are items that they distribute at least twice a week. We will be fundraising until February 2018 when we will be bringing all the collected and purchased items to Calais and handing them over to local organisations Mobile Refugee Support and Help Refugees, who will make sure that all of your donations will go directly to the people who need them. One year after the destruction of the Jungle, people are still coming to Calais. An estimated 2000 people, the majority of them men but also dozens of families with small children, are still living in the North of France. In the absence of a centralised camp, refugees are finding temporary shelter wherever they can; in forests, on the edge of industrial parks, beneath hedges, anywhere that offers  some respite from the elements. An inhumane situation made much worse by relentless police intimidation, harassment and destruction of property (plastic, tents, sleeping bags routinely taken and destroyed). As winter sets in and night temperatures start to plummet, these temporary ‘shelters’ offer scant protection against the cold, rain, and frost. The situation, already critical, is set to deteriorate. This is an appeal to help refugees stranded in the North of France get through the winter. Please donate what you can! Please get in touch if you would like to come along and volunteer for a few days or if you have items you would like to donate.
