To celebrate my 60th birthday this year I decided to challenge myself to do something I have never done before. I am taking part in the Chichester Half Marathon Nordic Walking category. All my life I have avoided doing any sport but for the past 6 months I have been training and I believe I can complete the 13.1 mile course (or the 10 mile course if it's raining) on October 8th 2017.
I have decided to walk to raise money for My Sisters' House in Bognor Regis.
My Sisters' House is the only women's centre in West Sussex formed by a group of local women in 2014. Based on their local knowledge they opened their first small drop-in service in 2015.
My Sisters' House is committed to enabling and empowering women of all ages to improve their life chances and fulfil their aspirations by promoting access to integrated services,the promotion of health, personal and socio-economic opportunities and working toward reducing inequalities. They are also committed to ensuring that their work is effective and achieves meaningful and sustainable outcomes for the women they support.
Their beneficiaries include women and girls who have suffered violence and abuse and are deeply traumatised and go on to face such problems as very low self-esteem, poor mental and physical health and sometimes turning to drugs and alcohol as coping mechanisms.
They have provided safe, tailored, outcome focused support to 317 women to-date.
All money raised will be used for a new fund to assist individual women who need help to move forward. Through the charitys' Step Forward project the funds will pay directly, for example, for course fee’s , transport costs, document fee’s such as much needed ID documents and training materials.
In all my adult life, although I have sponsored many family and friends, I have never asked anyone to sponsor me so I hope you will take this rare opportunity to sponsor me and help make the lives of local disadvantaged women better.
