Along with my little sister Cel and my big brother, Jerome, and thanks to their support and encouragement, I am running the Great Manchester Run 10km in May! As this is my first ever running event (not counting school cross country!), I would like to use this as an opportunity to try and raise funds for a wonderful local cause, Friends of Collett. Friends of Collett supports The Collett School for Special Educational Needs in Hemel Hempstead. The Collett School is a “very” special school attended by children from all over Hertfordshire and the neighbouring counties. Their children have many syndromes including Down's and 50% of their children have Autism. They are the only "Special" school in Hertfordshire who cater for 4 to 17 year olds and one of the lowest funded. 90% of our Local Authority funding is used for the necessary high ratio of staff leaving 10% to cover everything from loo rolls to books. Therefore even necessities at the school are a fundraising issue. As the staff themselves say, this is the only way in which the school is poor. On a recent visit to the school I was overwhelmed by the amazing learning environment the school provides and it was a real pleasure to attend their lively and fun morning assembly and see what a strong community they are. I also saw the extent to which the school is furnished by many recycled and hand-me down items of furniture and how well these items have been put to use to ensure every penny is well-spent in providing a warm, safe and home-like environment for their pupils and their differing needs. No amount is too small and I know that the school will be enormously grateful for any donation you are able to make and the support will certainly spur me on as I try to reach that 10km mark! Thank you X X X
