In 2015 my husband and I completed a Blacklight 5K run and raised over £700 for Petals. To continue supporting Petals in 2016 we have decided to take part in THE BRITISH 10K LONDON RUN on 10th July 2016. Supporting Petals allows them to continue helping more couples who face emotional difficulties after experiencing trauma or loss during pregnancy or birth. 4 years ago I was pregnant with hopes and expectations of what my birth experience would be like. Induction failed to progress and at 16 days overdue a period of reduced fetal movement lead to there being serious concerns for our baby. He had no variation in his heart rate and was showing signs of severe distress. Our son, Alex was born via emergency cesarean in July 2012. The trauma of the birth affected me deeply and triggered depression and anxiety.Breaking point came in 2014 when I sought medical help. Exhausted from fighting the hidden torment my inner dialogue gave me on a daily basis. I was told I was on the edge of a full nervous breakdown if nothing changed. I began medication to treat my symptoms whilst I worked with Petals on the cause of the problems. I remember my first counselling session with Petals. I explained what happened and how I felt. It still amazes me I was able to retell the story without a single tear. I had learnt to shut down my emotions and hide from them. I was told it was 'okay' to feel scared, angry, disappointed, upset. From that moment on I felt utter relief that it was okay to feel this way. I continue to work with Petals on my experience. Without Petals I wouldn't be where I am, I am so glad they were able to shine light in my darkest times. NHS Support stopped at medication and a review of my maternity notes. Petals offer support when no one else does. Their work should be available within every NHS maternity unit in the country for every parent traumatised by birth or for those who have to go home empty handed with no idea how to address their loss. Thankyou
