OSCAR Nottingham has produced a Food Manual, which is about healthy eating & understanding what your body needs for health and vitality. We are building on that through a series of sessions tackling health and wellbeing generally. We are going to apply for Reaching Communities Funding for this but there is a wide range of topics we would like to inform people about with the key aim of putting them more in control of their own health and wellbeing

Why they need our service

Nottingham has very high rates of obesity and heart disease. One of the causes is lack of knowledge about how to cook, shop and eat healthily, whilst at the same time saving money by preparing food at home instead of eating out, eating takeaway food, and even ready prepared meals from the supermarket. OSCAR is targeting people from the African and African Caribbean communities particularly, including of course those families with members who suffer from Sickle Cell Disorder.

Plan and expected results

The more that people understand about how their lifestyle impacts on their general health, and how being overweight can cause a range of health problems, such as Diabetes, the more they are put in control of their own lives and health, including those with Sickle Cell Disorder. This could save the NHS money through reduced use of their services including expensive hospitalisation. This is in line with City priorities.
