Could you invite a refugee to Christmas dinner this year? A bit tricky?
Maybe you could donate the cost of setting an extra place instead?
In recent months I've have the extraordinary privilege of working with the truly inspiring staff at the Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Refugee Forum. As you can imagine, they're working round the clock to prepare for an influx of asylum seekers fleeing from the chaos in Syria and other parts of the world.
But this is not all they have to do! This is all on top of their every day work supporting existing refugees and asylum seekers in Nottingham. On a typical morning there are 40+ people lined up outside the building, waiting for it to open in the hoping of getting to see a volunteer advisor. They wait in line, get a ticket, and wait some more. On most days all of the advice sessions for that day are filled by 11am, and many people have to be turned away.
The asylum process is horribly, abusively complicated, and many fall foul of a system that I struggle to understand. Many of these people came to us for refuge, fleeing from terrible ordeals, only to find themselves abandoned and rejected, destitute in a cold and lonely city.
When I visit the forum I feel completely helpless, I just don't know what to do or how to help. But the staff at the Forum do, and they need our help to keep doing their amazing work.
Please will you give a helping hand this Christmas? Will you set another place at the table and donate a dinner?
