Construction of a fruit cage. This is to prevent birds from eating our soft fruit (red and black currants, gooseberries, raspberries etc.)
Why they need our serviceAlthough we love wildlife - we have bees, are growing an insect-friendly fence along one side, and are putting up bird boxes, we need to keep some of the produce for ourselves!
Plan and expected resultsThe cage needs to have sides that can be rolled up, so insects can get in unhindered in spring, to pollinate the plants. When the fruit starts to develop, the mesh sides will be closed to keep the birds away. We will have a large section to roll up as the doorway for easy access, and the floor will be as firm as possible so less steady members can still have safe access.
