Hi Colleagues. In September I'll be attempting to cycle from Land's End to John O'Groats. Below are the reasons why and how funds raised will be used. Everyone involved with Erase Meso is thrilled you want to help. We really believe we can make a difference. (Jill, Paul's wife cried when she heard we were doing this!)
Thank you! Ed.
Paul's been my best mate since school. Nearly 35 years of friendship. We grew up together, travelled together and I was his best man in 2011. He is husband to Jill & Daddy to Cam, now 6.
In 2017 aged 43 and fighting fit, his lung suddenly collapsed & he was diagnosed with mesothelioma (asbestos cancer). He was given 12 months to live. 6 rounds of chemotherapy followed, then radiotherapy and surgery leaving him with one and a half working lungs. Paul miraculously survived. He vowed to raise funds to find a cure for mesothelioma and set up Erase Meso.
Paul, Nigel Shaddick (another meso warrior), 14 other amateur cyclists and I will take on this challenge in a world first for anyone with mesothelioma, let alone 2! We will cycle across Britain, 960 miles in 10 days facing distances of 100 miles a day and climb 15,000m in total (almost twice the height of Everest!) ALL money raised will fund research via this volunteer-led charity. www.erasemeso.org
How the funding will be spent We'll fund a number of leading-edge research projects, most likely in the areas of immunotherapy and CAR-T cell therapy. These projects are closest to a cure but have limited funds. We will update on exactly where the money has gone and what we've achieved through your support.
How this will benefit the community The UK has the highest incidence of meso in the world - 5000 deaths a year and rising. Despite being banned in 1999, asbestos is still found in over 50% of homes and 9/10 NHS hospitals. 12 people are diagnosed a day yet there is no current cure and prognosis is poor. Extra funding goes a long way in finding a cure for this devastating disease.
