After a year of Netflix, baking banana bread, countless dog walks and home renovations, this years Eddystone Charity Sailing Pursuit will be a lovely opportunity to get back out on the water and raise some vital money for charity.
The aim of the Eddystone Pursuit is to support charities who "benefit the human condition". Naturally Emma, Charlie and I will be supporting Horizons Children's Sailing Charity. The Pursuit is a 26 mile sail to the Eddystone Lighthouse and back again. We will be doing it on a Hawk 20 Keelboat fuelled by tea and cake!
Although 2020 was a hard year for everyone, it was even more so for the children we work with at Horizons. Over the winter we asked some of the families who come sailing with us how lockdown had affected them. This was just one of many replies -
"We are so looking forward to getting back to Horizons. It’s not just the outdoor activity, it’s the group, and it’s such a welcoming, inclusive and friendly group. It’s a place where my daughter can learn how to sail, make friends and it’s about teamwork. It’s the interaction other people that she misses. Lockdown has been a very lonely time in our house.”
At Horizons, our aim is to provide a safe and welcoming environment where children can go sailing, forget about any potential problems they may have at home or school and socialise with their friends. We do not get any government funding to do this, so we rely heavily on donations and grants. Any donation, big or small would be so gratefully welcomed!
If you would like any more information about what we do at Horizons, please head over to our website www.horizonsplymouth.org.
Thank you so much,
Emma, Charlie and Lois xx
