Reading is the foundation of all learning. Unfortunately due to living in highly deprived areas, with little home support many pupils have been unable to achieve a high enough level of reading prior to entering secondary education. The percentage of students in this category far exceeds national averages and is beyond the resource of the existing specialist remedial staff to tackle without some additional community based support.

The impact has already started and has been clearly recognised at the first pilot stage. Reading and the interest in reading has been greatly improved. The successful outcome will be to replicate the outcome of the secondary pilot group with the expanded student group at secondary level. Further success will flow from the expansion of the project into primary level schools to address the situation earlier and reduce the negative literacy impact in later years.
